The real issue is not how well Obama or McCain might do state-by-state, but that we shouldn’t have battleground states and spectator states in the first place. Every vote in every state should be politically relevant in a presidential election. And, every vote should be equal. We should have a national popular vote for President in which the White House goes to the candidate who gets the most popular votes in all 50 states.
The National Popular Vote bill would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and DC). The bill would take effect only when enacted, in identical form, by states possessing a majority of the electoral vote — that is, enough electoral votes to elect a President (270 of 538). When the bill comes into effect, all the electoral votes from those states would be awarded to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and DC).
Because of state-by-state enacted rules for winner-take-all awarding of their electoral votes, recent candidates with limited funds have concentrated their attention on a handful of closely divided “battleground” states. In 2004 two-thirds of the visits and money were focused in just six states; 88% on 9 states, and 99% of the money went to just 16 states. Two-thirds of the states and people have been merely spectators to the presidential election.
Another shortcoming of the current system is that a candidate can win the Presidency without winning the most popular votes nationwide.
The National Popular Vote bill has passed 21 state legislative chambers, including one house in Arkansas, Colorado, Maine, North Carolina, and Washington, and both houses in California, Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The bill has been enacted by Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, and Maryland. These four states possess 50 electoral votes– 19% of the 270 necessary to bring the law into effect.

I was a Hilary Supporter. Then I was looking at McCain and Obama equally… until McCain sold out to Big Oil and it became obvious through research that he supported Bush in many many policies. That scared me and made me lose respect for him. He is a good man, but he’s obsessed with war and I’m afraid he’ll go down that same path as Bush. And Palin? When he announced Sarah Palin as his VP choice, I gasped. She’s the one I’ve been e-mailing in Alaska for nearly two years about Aerial Gunning of Wolves… She supports running wolves to exhaustion then shooting them in the head from an airplane. Have you seen the videos? I have been protesting for this for two years. I was shocked when they announced Sarah Palin. How can John McCain do this? Awww I said. I know why. Because he’s viewed as too liberal and they needed someone who was Pro Oil and conservative. Bingo! Sarah Palin. The light bulb turned on.
She lacks moral character… probes, firings, banning books, making women pay for their own rape kits, no action against global warming, drilling in ecologically fragil areas… She’s got to go.
Palin… just scares me. She knows nothing of issues. What if McCain did get elected and died? Good chance!

First, let me say that I like Obama. I think he seems like a genuine guy, cool-headed and thoughtful. I believe he absolutely wants the status quo in politics to be shown the door and usher in a system shift so that the government works like the Founding Fathers wanted. But what I don’t like are his policies.
He is naive to think that he can institute a socialized healthcare system with the debt we have in the nation. He is naive to believe that free education through college will not raise taxes. He is mistaken if he believes he can get out of Iraq without consequences that will be far-reaching and up the troop levels in Afghanistan without maintaining the spending for the military that we have seen in the past few years. All of his policies are great sounding. He is a wonderful orator and very motivational, but not very practical as it pertains to WHAT IT WILL ALL COST.
If I were McCain and were elected President, I think Obama would be a fantastic Secretary of State. He seems like diplomacy is his niche, but unfortunately, as Commander in Chief, you have to be the “bad cop” and let the Sec of State be the “good cop”. You can’t be the guy everyone likes in that leadership position. Leaders of other nations like Russia, China and Iran will run Obama over in his quest for all of us to “just get along’. It’s a noble goal, but just not realistic. I think he is naive.
I don’t have 100% confidence that McCain/Palin are going to win, or that things will make some dramatic shift, but I do think McCain will veto a lot of bills with overt pork attached to them, that he will take a hard line and be willing to stand up for our country in the world against the leaders and countries who’d like to see us gone or weakened significantly. And I think Palin is a bright lady and, given some time, be able to take over for McCain should that tragic possibility become reality. She will do what other great leaders do and surround herself with those who know more than she does and then make a decision and stand by it.
Obama has a great vision, but I just believe that, when the rubber meets the road, he is not going to be able to “save” this country with his policies as they stand today.
