If you live in a swing state this year, you have likely seen a few ads from John McCain and Barack Obama. The New York Times and CNN take a closer look at where the candidates are running ads and spending money.

CNN‘s map covers the entire campaign for president going back to January 2007, more than a year before the first primary. The ad spending map shows that Barack Obama has out spent McCain in nearly every state. Minnesota and West Virginia are the only places McCain has advertised on television more than Obama.

Combined Obama and McCain have spent nearly $300 million on TV advertising, the top states are Pennsylvania $47 million, Ohio $32MM, Florida $27MM, Viginia $22MM, and Michigan $22MM

The New York Times provides data on spending by non-campaign parties. The RNC is significantly out spending the DNC and Obama edges out McCain overall, while McCain spends more on National ads (most spending is target to swing states).
Most of the corporate sponsors revealed so far for Denver and St. Paul (the host committees do not have to disclose donors or how much they raise until 60 days after the convention) are veterans of Washington’s money-for-influence game

If your boss maxed out at that fundraiser or got comped? Whether your neighbor’s political involvement stops at that hideous lawn sign?

FundRace gives you the technology to do what politicians and journalists have been doing for years: find out where the money’s coming from, see who it’s going to, and solve the mystery of why that crazy ex-roommate of yours is now the Ambassador to Turks and Caicos

Barack Obama has opted out of public financing for the general election stating “the public financing of presidential elections, as it exists today, is broken — and the Republican Party apparatus has mastered the art of gaming this broken system” in his USA Today Op-Ed. John McCain will likely try to make this an issue, since Obama once said he would use public financing if his opponent did and John McCain has opted in.

The maps below show the fund raising edge that Barack Obama has over John McCain that certainly was a motivating factor in opting out of the public financing funds. Barack Obama appears to be raising more than John McCain everywhere, including Republican strongholds such as Texas and the South. McCain looks to only have a fund raising advantage in his home state of Arizona.
